Mixed Media Collage
Projects & Activities
Included in the Eiteljorg’s Contemporary Native American art collection is a mixed-media piece by Eiteljorg Fellow, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith (Confederated Salish and Kootenai Nation). Los Banderas de los Estados Unidos, 1996, was created using acrylic paint and torn or cut pieces of paper on canvas. Mixed media is as simple as that; multiple different materials used to create one piece of art. As long as you take two (or more!) different mediums or materials, you have created a mixed-media piece. Paint, crayon, colored pencils, watercolors, paper, fabric, glass, ribbons, yarn, wire, the combinations and possibilities are endless!
Piece of cardboard or heavy paper for the backing
Newspaper, magazine or book pages
Acrylic or watercolor paint
Gather your materials.
Start making your background. It could be painted, or you could glue some paper on for a collage look. There are no rules here!
When you are finished with the background, use stickers or markers to embellish. Write on your piece. Make more layers!
Keep adding and embellishing with various materials until your piece feels complete!
